Belleville, a multi-ethnic and colourful neighbourhood where Édith Piaf spent her childhood, is a Parisian district in 20th Arrondissement. Well-known for its street art, it is also home to one of the city’s Chinatowns. I was exploring the quarter and initially wanted to create a series for my Magnum workshop assignment. There were a few prostitutes or les marcheuses
(the walkers) as they call it in French at the streets already. People were selling corn and books near the Métro
entrance. When I went to the local market people were being rather aggressive and suspicious of someone there with a camera. Somehow I was even robbed, and my memory card case was stolen. Despite the incident I went back there again, to shoot more of a “beautiful town” and discovered its many faces.
